A Queer Roma photographer returns from London to his hometown in Hungary to stage a public exhibition – seeking recognition from his community in a country where the public display of LGBTQI+ content is banned.
“The Exhibition” follows Béla Váradi, a London-based queer Roma artist, as he returns to his impoverished hometown in Hungary with a dream: to stage a public exhibition of his work inside the very community he once left behind.
Driven by a vision of a joyful homecoming, Béla organises a local exhibition and communal meal, inviting both Roma and non-Roma residents. But in a town shaped by deep-rooted prejudice and in a country where LGBTQI+ visibility is increasingly restricted, his return becomes a fragile and unpredictable act.
As the event unfolds, Béla is forced to confront the gap between who he has become and the place he still longs to belong to.
