Spatialized audio installation: 24 embedded small format speakers, 4 full range speakers, movement sensors

‘Drone’ creates a dynamic event invoking ‘sense memory’ from deep within the body. Each viewers body entering the space has the potential to trigger a mechanism that results in them being sonically shot.

The shot is accurately directed at the viewer through a system of sensors and a spatial network of speakers. The shot is experienced on both sides of the body, the individual experiences a ricochet at one side and a mussel blast as a bullet leaves the barrel of the gun at the other. Sound is viscerally experienced passing through the body. The installation creates an area of insecurity, uncertainty and threat through being momentarily targeted.

The installation employs actual recordings of guns being fired, bullets entering into various surfaces, ricochets, drone aircraft and the bullet bow shock wave (the sound of a bullet breaking the sound barrier) to recreate the sonic stages that occur when one is shot at and how they would be experienced spatially.

‘Drone’ was selected for Xhibit 2013 and exhibited in Central St Martins and Matt Roberts Gallery on Vyner Street, London.
